Books

Ashes Trilogy by Ilsa J. Bick (includes Ashes, Shadows, and Monsters)

These books are great. They’re pretty long, so I’m only going to type the summary for the first one but if it sounds interesting to you, you should definitely read all three books.

Ashes Summary:

An electromagnetic pulse flashes across the sky, destroying every electronic device, wiping out every computerized system, and killing billions. Alex hiked into the woods to say goodbye to her dead parents and her personal demons. Now desperate to find out what happened after the pulse crashed her to the ground, Alex meets up with Tom- a young soldier- and Ellie, a girl whose grandfather was killed by the EMP. For this improvised family and the others who are spared, it’s now a question of who can be trusted and who is no longer human.

Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick

Summary:

Britt Pfeiffer has trained to backpack the Teton Range, but she isn’t prepared when her ex-boyfriend, who still haunts her every thought, wants to join her. Before Britt can explore her feelings for Calvin, an unexpected blizzard forces her to seek shelter in a remote cabin and accept the hospitality of its two very handsome occupants- but these men are fugitives, and they take her hostage. In exchange for her life, Britt agrees to guide the men off the mountain. As they set off, Britt knows she must stay alive long enough for Calvin to find her. Things get even more complicated when Britt finds chilling evidence of a series of murders that took place on that very mountain- a discovery that may make her the killer’s next target. But nothing is as it seems in the mountains, and everyone is keeping secrets, including Mason, one of her kidnappers. His kindness is confusing Britt. Is he an enemy or an ally?

Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream in Milan

I was a little skeptical of this at first because I don’t like Nyx’s lipsticks, but I heard lots of great things about this, and they were right, this is amazing! I was going for a mauvey- pink color when I chose this, and the color of the tube led me to believe it was the right color. However, the actual color of the cream is a bright pink, which is not bad (I actually think this color is one that works best on me), but I wish they tried to match the color of the tube to the product a little better. With that aside, I absolutely adore this! The color is very pigmented, and it goes on smoothly. It takes a bit longer to dry than I thought it would, but this is not a problem for me. Just be careful so you don’t smudge it. The color is also very long-lasting, and has a great matte texture. It is also extremely cheap ($3!) and you can get it in a drugstore. I would recommend this to everyone who wants something nice and matte.

Elf Poreless Face Primer

I think this face primer works very well. It basically sucks the moisture/oil out of your face, which is great if you have moderately- very oily skin. it makes your skin look less shiny and more matte after you apply foundation. This also makes your face have a more flat surface, so if you have acne you want to cover up, it helps to conceal a little more. This is pretty powerful, so if you use it, only put a very small amount on your finger and apply it where needed. This was also very cheap, only $6.

Fashion

Black And White Nike Free Runs

These shoes are so comfortable! I think they’ll be great for gym class when I start school, or walking my dog. I’ve also been into more minimalistic/simple shoes lately, so I just picked up these black and white ones. These will also match a lot of my outfits.

Gold Heart- Shaped Sunglasses: TJ Maxx, $12

I love how cute these are! They are great for just in the car, out in public, or a day at the beach.

App- Songza

songza songzam

The picture on the right is the app’s image, and the one on the right is an example of what I’ll be talking about below. This is a really cool music app. Based on the time of day, it will show some options for what you may be doing. You select one, and then pick the type of music you’d like to listen to, and it will give you a station full of different songs. For instance, right now I could pick one that says “working out” and then I could select the type of music ( like pop, rap, indie, etc.) and then pick a station I think I would like. This is probably something I would use a lot this school year, because I like to play music when I’m getting ready. Another great thing is, this app is free.

That’s all for my August favorites! I hope you guys try some of this stuff out. I hope you enjoyed this post, and I’ll see you next time! (also, just a side note- I’m doing a back to school post on Tuesday, so stay tuned for that!)

DIY Room Decor- Watercolor Garland

Hi everybody! I’m sorry I didn’t post on WordPress Saturday. I tried but when I posted it, the app crashed and hadn’t saved any of my work. I also didn’t have any extra time to retype my post so I just didn’t post. But today I have a really cool room decor DIY that I’m going to tell you how to do. So let’s get right into it!
What you will need:

  • Water colors of various colors and shades (5 at a minimum but more for more variety)
  • Water (obviously)
  • A paintbrush- make sure it’s not super cheap, so the bristles don’t come out
  • A water dish
  • Thick white paper (it should be fine as long as it’s thicker than printer paper)
  • Twine
  • Clothes pins or some kind of clip
  • Circular object to make a stencil with
  • Pencil
  • Scissors

^ I used the top of this gum container as a stencil for the circles

Step 1:

Place your circular object on your paper and trace it with a pencil, then cut out the circle. Trim the edges of the circle to make it more round if you would like

Step 2:

Put some water on your brush and mix it with your desired water color. (You may need a bit more water if you’re using new water colors) Then paint roughly 1/5 of the circle with color. It’s ok if it’s not very pigmented and watery, you can always do a second coat.

Step 3:
Then repeat step 2 with four other colors, putting them right next to each other.

Step 4:

Next, get more water than before on your brush and use it with your first color, so the color is more pigmented. Quickly rinse the brush and repeat with the two colors surrounding it, and swirl the colors a bit with your brush, but not too much. Do this for all of the colors on the circle. Then set your circle aside.

Step 5:
Continue steps 1-4 until you have about 12-15 circles, or however many you think would be accurate for the length of the garland you will make. Next, set your circles on newspaper to dry overnight.

Step 6:
Next, take some twine and stretch it across where you want your garland and cut a little more than you need for the length. You can nail the twine into the wall, or tie it into something. (I tied mine between something hanging from my ceiling and my curtain rod)

Step 7:

Then get your clips and your circles once they’re dry, and clip your circles onto the twine. Now you have a beautiful water color garland! I think this looks super cool, sort of like tie-dye.

That’s all for today’s post! I hope you guys liked it and will try it out. See you next time!

OOTW: Vacation Outfits

Hey guys! I got back from my beach vacation a few days ago so today I thought that I would show you the outfits I wore there. I hope I can inspire you with my style. Let’s get started!

Outfit 1:

Black and White Floral Knit Kimono: Kohls, $25
Black Crop Top: Ross, $7
White Super High-Waisted Scalloped Shorts: TJ Maxx, $15
Black Studded Gladiator Sandals: Steinmart, $30
I wore this outfit on the day that we drove down to the beach. It’s very comfortable and stylish, and it would probably be great for a flight too. The kimono can keep you warm if it’s a little chilly or windy outside somewhere, and it adds a nice girly element to the outfit, which looks great with the edgy shoes.

Outfit 2:

Black Floral Skater Dress: Kohls, $28
Rose Gold Sandals: Kmart, $10
I think this dress has a very cute, vintage vibe to it. It has spaghetti straps, so I wore it on a day where we went to the beach for a few hours and I just wore my bikini under it. I also love the rose gold sandals with this dress because they bring out the pinky undertones in the floral print and really upgrade the outfit.

Outfit 3:

Navy Blue Tank Top: Target, $13
Blue and White Striped Printed Flared Leg Pants: Marshalls, $7
This outfit is more bohemian than the first couple. The top is a bit cropped, but it’s not that noticeable. These pants are super soft and comfortable, and they don’t overheat you on a hot summer day. I didn’t really have any shoes that matched, so I just paired this outfit with a silver glittery pair of flip flops.

Outfit 4:

Pink Daisy Printed Lace Topped Peplum Top: Papaya, $15
White Capris: JCPenney, $18
This is a slightly more fancy outfit, because we went to a more formal restaurant for dinner on this day. This top is pretty and comfortable, and it looks very nice and sophisticated with these pants. Again, I just slid on the glittery silver flip flops for this outfit.

Outfit 5:

Black Embroidered Tasseled Short Sleeved Kimono: Cato, $20
Royal Blue T-Shirt: JCPenney, $8
Blue Frayed-Edge Jean Shorts: American Eagle, $35
This outfit is pretty casual. The kimono is kind of sheer, so it’s nice and thin and isn’t hot on. I also had a simple turquoise pair of flip flops on with it. This is a more simple outfit, and I wore it when we went to see the wild horses in Corolla.

That’s all for today’s post! I hope this inspired you. I also hope you enjoyed this post, and see you next time!

How I Pack For Vacation + Packing Tips/Life Hacks

Hello everyone! So I’m leaving for vacation to the Outer Banks tomorrow and I thought that I would show you how I pack and what traveling/packing little tips and hacks I use. I hope this post helps you when you need to pack for vacation. I also want to say that next Saturday, I will do my vacation outfits of the week. Now let’s get started!
I just thought I should show you guys what my suitcase looks like so you can understand what I’m talking about better. So I have a medium-sized suitcase which is best if you’re going on a weeklong trip. On the outside, it has a small pocket and a slightly larger pocket. On the inside, in the “door” of the suitcase, it has a mesh zippered pocket like area. In the main area of the suitcase, there are buckles so you can secure your clothes or whatever else you pack. There is also a zippered compartment in the bottom which is great for if you have dirty shoes or something like that.

So first, I unzipped the compartment in the bottom of the suitcase and I put 2 pairs of flip flops in it. This is a nice storage idea because flip flops are flat shoes so they won’t take up much space plus if they’re dirty, they won’t get your clothes dirty.

Next, I picked out my outfits and pajamas, and rolled them up. I put pajamas on one side and everyday clothing on the other side. Rolling clothes up is better than folding because it saves space, and prevents wrinkles so you won’t have to iron your clothes when you reach your destination. I then put my beach coverup on top and added my makeup bag, and buckled it all in.

I then took an empty tic tac container, and put some bobby pins in it. This is great for traveling because it is secure, and it is harder to lose your bobby pins. It is also easy to get them out.

Next, I picked out some jewelry that I thought I would wear, a put it in this little plastic box sort of thing that I randomly found in my room. This probably doesn’t help my jewelry from getting tangled up, but it saves space.

Inside of the lid of my suitcase, I slid in a pair of Sperrys and put some no-show socks inside to save space. Then I added in my swimsuit, the jewelry box, some underwear, the bobby pins, and a couple of pairs of sunglasses. I put the sunglasses on top of my underwear to cushion them so the lenses don’t pop out or they don’t break.

In the smaller pocket on the outside of my suitcase, I added in the products that I’ll use every day. I added in my toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face cream, nasal spray, Chapstick, my glasses and my contacts.

In the larger pocket, I packed my brush, comb, spray sunscreen and sun lotion, regular lotion, hand sanitizer, Benadryl cooling gel, and cortisone cream.

I then packed a backpack full of things to entertain me on the way there.

In the front pockets, I added my phone charger, earbuds, and I’ll add my phone tomorrow.

I brought a sun hat but it wouldn’t fit in my suitcase, so I folded in the floppy part and put it in my backpack.

I also added in my wallet and a thin cardigan in case it gets cold.

Next I put in two books, one for the car ride and one for the trip itself. I recommend the one on the right.

I then added my meditative calming coloring book which I talked about in a recent post if you want to check it out here

I also added a fashion drawing book. It’s basically a sketchbook but it tells you what fashion items to draw.

Then I added my colored pencils.

That’s everything I packed! I hope you guys enjoyed this post, and see you next time!

5 Pinterest Summer 2015 Makeup and Hair Trends To Try

Hey guys! Today I want to show you 5 hair and makeup trends I found on Pinterest. I think these are really cool and you should definitely try them out if you like them. I just want to say before we begin, that none of these pictures are my pictures. I found all of them on Pinterest and I do not own any of them. Now, let’s get into the post!

#1: Long Bob (Or “Lob”)

I think this is a super cute medium-short hairstyle. This is great for if you have really long hair and you want to cut it, but you want to grow it out again. I think this is a really nice, effortless looking hairstyle that can work on almost anyone.

#2: Nails with Gold Accents

I think this is a very sophisticated look for your nails. It’s kind of girly, and it looks great for a fancy event or holiday.

#3: Bright, Bold Eye Makeup

I think this looks great for the summer. It can be a hard trend to make look amazing, but once you do, you wear it to so many places. It’s definitely better for a more formal event though. This is not something I would wear just because I’m not sure if I can pull it off, but on the right person, it can look great.

#4: Purple Lips

I love this trend so much! Purple lipstick looks great anytime of the year, but it’s especially popular right now. This is something I like to wear often. It can look very mature if you wear it the right way. This is something that is a bit more bold, but it looks nice on everyone. (In case you wanted to know, in the picture above, I believe the lipsticks are from the Sephora brand)

#5: Floral Nail Art

Floral Nail Art is something that looks beautiful year round, but it really gets a boost in popularity around Spring and Summer. This looks the best during summertime with brighter colors.

If you would like to see more like this, follow me on Pinterest here

That’s all for today’s post! I hope you guys enjoyed it, and see you next time.

Extraordinary Means by Robyn Schneider
Summary:

At seventeen, Lane finds himself at Latham House, a sanatorium for teens suffering from an incurable strain of tuberculosis. Part hospital and part boarding school, Latham is a place of endless rules and confusing rituals, where it’s easier to fail breakfast than it is to flunk French. There Lane encounters a girl he knew years ago. Instead of the shy loner he remembers, Sadie has transformed. At Latham, she is sarcastic, fearless, and utterly compelling. Her friends, a group of eccentric troublemakers, fascinate Lane, who has never stepped out of bounds his whole life. And as he gradually becomes one of them, Sadie shows him their secrets: how to steal internet, how to sneak into town, and how to disable the med sensors they must wear at all times. But there are consequences to having secrets, particularly at Latham House. And as Lane and Sadie begin to fall in love and their group begins to fall sicker, their insular world threatens to come crashing down.

Beauty/Makeup:

 Seacret Facial Products:

I actually bought these products last year around this time, but my blog didn’t exist then so I thought I would review this for you guys. I bought these at a kiosk sort of thing in the mall. The salesperson said that it would help with my acne and i tried the products and they worked. It actually costed quite a lot, around $200, and I just want to say that it’s not worth that much. It’s doesn’t really help to get rid of acne, however I still use then for their real use.

The first product I want to review is the skin peeling gel. (Picture at the bottom) This product works really well. You take a little bit on your finger and rub it on your face, and it takes off your dead skin. This is especially great in the winter and fall when skin gets dry and flaky. I love using this, but it should only be used once a week.

The next product is the purifying peeling milk. (First picture) This has a nice, creamy texture with apricot seeds in it. This is to be applied after the peeling gel. It is really nice to exfoliate my face and get extra dead skin off.

The last product is the moisturizer. I feel that this is a nice, refreshing moisturizer, but it’s pretty standard and you could get a moisturizer of equal standards at a drug store.

Maybelline New York Blushed Nudes Palette

I’ve seen this in magazines, and thought it was really pretty so I thought I should try it out. I’m very glad I got it. The colors are shimmery and subtle, great for an everyday look. I would probably wear these in spring or fall. The colors are not very pigmented, so you must apply it multiple times to achieve the full color. One thing I like about this is that on the back, it has quads, trios, and duos of eyeshadows to create different looks. Also, I like that it is a product you can find in a drugstore, and it’s relatively cheap.
Others:

Color me calm meditative coloring book: Barnes and Noble, $17

This is a coloring book for adults. It’s great for me because I still like to color but most coloring books are for children. This one is nice because it calms you down. It has 6 sections, (example photos shown above) so you can have variety in what you color. The sections are: Mandalas, water scenes, wooded scenes, geometric patterns, floral and fauna, and natural patterns. I think the illustrations are beautiful and they look even better when they are colored. This book is also great if you need something to do when you’re driving somewhere for vacation. There are more of these books that are for other things than calming, and I wanted to get them but I didn’t have enough money.
That’s all for today’s post. I hope you guys enjoyed it, and see you next time!

How to do a ‘Mohawk’ French Braid

Hello everyone! Today I wanted to show you a modern, edgy twist on the traditional French braid hairstyle. I actually just tried this out one time when I was bored with how my hair looked, and it looked great! Anyways, let’s get right into it.
Step 1: Brush out your hair so it’s tangle-free, and then comb it back so you have no part.

Step 2: Take a medium-small section of hair from the very front of your head, close to your face, and separate it into three section.

Step 3: Braid the sections together for one rotation, then add more hair to each section of hair and braid it in.

Step 4: Continue adding sections into the braid until you have used all of your hair, then braid the rest of your hair in a regular braid.

Final Result:

This hairstyle is basically just a normal French braid that starts closer to your face with smaller sections added in. Because it starts father up on your head, you achieve a ‘mohawk’ effect which can go great with an edgy outfit, or you could dress it down to look more girly. If you feel like this hairstyle is not something you would wear, you can just wear it overnight and when you take it out, you will result in beautiful heat-less beachy waves. I really like this hairstyle. I think that it’s super easy to do, and it’s very versatile.
That’s all for today’s post! I hope you guys enjoyed it, and see you next time.

How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Hey guys. I’m really sorry I didn’t post on Tuesday.  I know this is no excuse, but I lost track of time and I didn’t even know it was Tuesday until it was too late. But now I promise that I will be more focused and post on schedule. And I will be posting some really fun things later on this summer, so watch out for that. Anyways, today I’m doing a post that I was supposed to do a while ago, but I got sidetracked. I’m going to show and tell how I clean my makeup brushes.

Cleaning their makeup brushes should be at least a bi-weekly activity for those who use them, but a lot of people don’t clean their makeup brushes nearly as often as they should.  Here are some reasons you should clean your makeup brushes more often:

  • Over time from using your makeup brushes, the brushes build up on skin oils and makeup stays in them
  • This is a breeding ground for bacteria which can cause acne outbreaks on your face
  • Cleaning makeup brushes can make the bristles softer and nicer feeling on your skin

Here is how I clean my makeup brushes.

Step 1: Get a type of soap. (Baby shampoo is recommended, but I didn’t have any, so I just used hand soap(dishwashing soap also works))

Step 2: Put some soap in a bowl and run hot water over it and fill the bowl so the water is soapy.

Step 3: Swirl each brush around in the water. Pay extra attention to blending brushes (foam ones) and eyeliner brushes because the makeup is harder to get out. With blending brushes, I’d recommend get it wet, then squeezing it and continually doing that until all or most of the makeup comes out.

Step 4: Leave the brushes sitting in the bowl with all bristles submerged for 5-10 minutes.

Step 5: Rinse the brushes with cold water, then reshape the bristles if needed.

Step 6: Create a sort of seesaw with a round object (I used a tube of mascara, but you’ll probably need something larger especially if you have more brushes to clean than me), and a paper towel.

Step 7: Balance your brushes on the “seesaw” with the bristles facing downwards and leave to dry for 6-8 hours. (It’s probably best to do this overnight)

And that’s all! This is super easy to do and it works very well. It makes my brushes clean and soft. I hope you guys enjoyed this post, and I’ll see you next time!

Summer Haul Part 2: Kohls, Ross + more!

Hey everyone! Since it’s summer and I have a lot of free time, I’ve been shopping quite a bit recently and I thought I would show my recent finds with you guys. I made this haul a part 2 since I already had a summer haul. So here’s the link to the first one if you haven’t seen it.
https://nicolefemme2000.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/summer-haul-2015🌞/
Now let’s get started with part 2!

Kohls

Rose Printed V-neck T-shirt, $16

I got this top to wear on more casual days. The rose print has sort of a vintage look to it which I like a lot.

Black and Red Zippered Plaid Skirt, $36, $7.20 on sale

I know this is a fall item, but this was super cheap on sale. Also, I kind of have an obsession with plaid skirts so I had to have it.

Gray and White Marbled T-shirt, $20, $10 on sale

This is just another casual t-shirt. I thought this looked very modern, and tumblr which is a look I like, so I picked this up.

Blue Patterned Racer-Back Tank Top- $10

I really love the colors in this top. It has a nice, summery pattern and it looks great on.

Black Tropical Skort, $36

This item was a bit more pricy than I would usually buy, but when I got it it was the only thing I bought. At first, I was skeptical because it’s a skort and I used to wear those when I was little, so I thought it would look childish but it doesn’t. It’s very comfortable and cute. I am also in love with this pattern, it’s very summery.

Black and White Floral Oversized Cardigan, $40, $20 on sale

I really love the pattern on this. It’s classic black and white with a modern twist. It’s pretty easy to match and wear, and it’s comfortable too. I think this could make a cute flight outfit, or just something cute to throw on when it’s a bit chilly. It’s a very light sweater, but I would probably wear it most in fall and spring.

Black Floral Skater Dress, $25

I really love the design of this dress  it looks very vintage to me. This is a nice, thin dress that is perfect for a hot summer day. I recently wore this to the beach as a coverup and it was very nice.

Target

Neon Yellow, Turquoise, and Lavender Racer-Back Push-Up Bikini Top, $18

Target always has great swimwear, and this is no exception. The colors are beautiful and vibrant, and the whole thing is quite high-quality feeling, in fact it reminds me of a triangl bathing suit. I also like that this is push-up because I have a small chest and this makes it look more flattering.

Purple multi-colored crochet-edged shorts, $18

I don’t have many purple items in my closet, but I thought this would make a nice addition. These are very unique and cute.

Navy and Turquoise Shorts, $18

These are pretty similar to the previous pair of shorts. I really love the colors in this pair though. These remind me of the ocean.

Ross

Black Rose-Printed High-Low Dress, $14

I really like high-low hemmed dresses and skirts, and I hadn’t owned any until buying this dress. I really like the floral pattern, and I think this would look cute wearing out to dinner.

Black and White Patterned Super Soft Pants, $6

If you’ve seen the part 1 of the summer haul, you would knew that I already have 3 pairs of these but I can’t help it. These are so soft, comfortable, and cute.

White Tulle Overlay Crochet Floral Skirt, $15

This is definitely not something I would typically wear. It was kind of an impulse buy, but I think this is very cute and girly and boho. This can definitely look great on someone who makes it work, and I intend to do that.

That’s all for part 2 of my summer haul! I hope you guys enjoyed this post, and see you next time!
